A newborn today gets a hospital bracelet, a soft blanket, and about four hundred photos.
Now rewind two thousand years. A baby is born in the house next door, and Ima rushes over to help. You get sent for water.
The prophet Ezekiel lists what every newborn should get on the day it's born. You cut the cord. You wash the baby with water. You rub the baby with salt. And you wrap the baby tight in cloths.
Tobi has questions. Mostly, why salt? Nobody is completely sure. Some thought it cleaned and toughened the skin. Others saw it as protection.
Either way, it mattered. Centuries later, the Talmud even says you may salt and swaddle a newborn on the Sabbath.
Then the wrapping. Long strips of cloth wound around the baby, arms in, snug as a loaf of bread. Tobi asks if the baby is in trouble. Savta says that in her day, they used more salt.
Now think of the carols: wrapped in swaddling clothes. It sounds like something special. But in Luke, it's exactly what Ima just did. Mary wrapped her son in bands of cloth.
And that was the sign the angels gave the shepherds: a baby wrapped in cloths, lying in a manger. Jesus came into the world the way every baby in Bethlehem did.
Your baby gets a bracelet. Theirs got a pinch of salt.
