Look at any nativity set. Three kings, three camels, all crowded around the manger.
Uncle Eli tells it that way every year. Three kings, gold crowns, the night Jesus was born. Eli is very sure.
Now rewind two thousand years and open Matthew, the only Gospel that tells this story. Count the kings. Zero.
Matthew calls them magi, wise men from the east. He never says how many there were, and he never calls them kings.
Three gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh, so later Christians pictured three visitors. The crowns came later too, when writers linked them to a psalm about kings bringing gifts.
Eli's unibrow drops. Then the bigger surprise. Matthew says the magi entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother.
The house. Not a stable. And Herod later went after the boys of Bethlehem, two years old and under, based on what the magi told him. So the visit may have come long after that first night.
Your nativity set squeezes two different moments onto one table: the shepherds on the night he was born, and the magi, some time later.
Eli puts one king back in the box. Then, quietly, the other two. He keeps the camels.
